Cohort 3 completed their Summer Intensive on July 11 – 13! Topics over the 3 days focused on model ecosystems, early learning, and expanded learning. On the first day of the Intensive, teams were asked to reflect on what their ecosystem means to them, and build a physical representation of what their ecosystem looks like “today”.  Each team’s design principles will guide their work going forward, and we will revisit the model ecosystem at the end of the Institute to see the changes each ecosystem has gone through.

Day two focused on STEM in Early Learning. Dr. Sharon Boles from the Children and Families Commission of Orange County shared the Early Developmental Index (EDI), and important tool used to measure kindergarten readiness. Learn more about your school district’s EDI here.

Several breakout sessions were held to showcase the types of STEM activities that can be used for younger children. Huge thanks to the following presenters for sharing their best practices:

  • Tiffany Alva, THINK Together
  • Jean Barbre, Children and Families Commission of Orange County
  • Jennifer Robinson, Buena Park School District
  • Rochelle Santacruz, Anaheim Elementary School District

The third and final day brought attention to Expanded Learning programs. Cyndee Zandes led the day with insightful activities that shined a light on having Expanded Learning as an extension of the school day, rather than a separate program “after school”.

Thank you to all of our presenters throughout the Summer Intensive! OC STEM looks forward to seeing everyone in September.
